ABOUT US

Saving Lives Five Towns Drug and Alcohol Coalition is a community organization, now a Drug Free Communities Coalition (DFC), providing prevention and awareness education about youth mental health issues and the dangers of alcohol and substance misuse.

Saving Lives, collaborating with law enforcement agencies, behavioral/healthcare partners, educational professionals, and other civic organizations is working to promote healthy and safe environments for our families.

The Saving Lives Five Towns Drug & Alcohol Coalition (SLFT) was launched in response to growing concerns of youth substance abuse, mental health and its impact on the families of the Greater Five Towns.

The Coalition was founded in July 2019 by and under the auspices of the Marion and Aaron Gural JCC, the UJA Federation and the Mazer Family Fund to address community issues impacting the greater Five Towns, Nassau County on Long Island in New York. “Five Towns” includes the communities of Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Inwood, Woodmere, Hewlett and surrounding areas such as Far Rockaway.

Seeking a community-based response, the Gural JCC and Saving Lives Five Towns Drug and Alcohol Coalition mobilized a diverse group of community stakeholders to serve as founding members of the SLFT Coalition based on their expertise, knowledge of the community, commitment to youth development, and willingness to utilize the data-driven Strategic Prevention Framework model.

Community leaders engaged (including religious leaders, educators and heads of local organizations), healthcare, parents, teachers, law enforcement, businesses, youth, health providers, state, local and governmental agencies with the expertise in substance abuse, and other community activists who are tackling issues of youth mental health and youth alcohol and substance misuse.

Throughout the United States, community coalitions make a significant difference. local coalitions continue to change the way that American communities respond to the threats of illegal drugs, alcohol abuse and tobacco use. By mobilizing the entire community communities can transform themselves. national surveys show a steady downward trend in substance
